So Far from God: A Journey to Central America
So Far From God is the story of a journey from Spain to Central America. The author travelled through California, 'a place so far into the future it is practically detached from the continent', and then to Mexico. From there he set out for the ruined countries — Guatemala, El Salvador and Nicaragua — where the word 'America' was first used. Marnham was intrigued by the old Spanish colonial empire which had given birth to a monstrous child, the United States — a world power whose character could hardly be less Spanish. In the North American imagination 'the Hispanic threat' is identified with Communism. Marnham wanted to see for himself the defiance offered to the most powerful country by these tiny ancestors.
