Petticoat Surgeon
Dr. Bertha Van Hoosen was one of the pioneer women in American medicine. When she announced that she wanted to become a surgeon, her parents did not approve and wouldn't fund her schooling. Bertha worked odd jobs to earn money for her education. In 1888, she graduated with a degree in medicine and began her illustrious career as an obstetrician, gynecologist, surgeon, teacher, and women's health advocate.
