The Man Who Cancelled Himself
Stewart Hoag, former literary wunderkind turned celebrity ghost, finds himself beset from all sides, professional and personal, and his current assignment — to write the "autobiography" of TV comic Lyle Hudnut — may be more than even the intrepidly dapper Hoagy can bear. The Uncle Chubby Show, Lyle's phenomenally successful sitcom, has been under siege ever since the star was embarrassingly arrested in a porno movie theater. Now Hoagy's doing time on the set with what appear to be a bunch of manic, subversive lunatics — writers, producers, actors, even the wardrobe woman. Things start to go wrong gradually, but the mischief soon escalates to murder. Someone even tries to run Hoagy over one night, right in front of the Ralph Lauren boutique. And then his inseparable sidekick, the fish-eating basset hound Lulu, is attacked by the show's rottweiler dog-star. Perhaps it's just as well that Hoagy's former wife, the luscious and lovable actress Merilee Nash, has asked to "borrow" Lulu — the only offspring of their endlessly complicated relationship. Merilee, hugely pregnant, intrepidly refuses to divulge the father's identity, and that humiliation is just one more cross Hoagy has to bear.
