The Little Girl and the Dragon
Kindergarten-Grade 2 — One day, a picture-book dragon escapes the confines of its pages and begins to devour the contents of a young girl's room. It swallows several items before the youngster has had enough and demands the return of her possessions. When the creature seems reluctant to comply, she threatens to sit on the book, leaving it homeless. It sighs and blows all of the objects out, and the youngster allows it to resume its rightful place. Shimmering colored-pencil illustrations amusingly depict a large greedy, green dragon and a strong-willed blond child, but the slight story has little in the way of plot development or resolution. Simple as it is, there's something empowering about the child's stubbornness in standing up for her rights, and young readers will appreciate her independent triumph over the bullying monster. — Anna DeWind, Milwaukee Public Library
