William Kentridge

William Kentridge's animated films offer a unique view of South Africa today, from the hearings of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission to traces of apartheid's violence in the landscape around Johannesburg. This is the first book to document the work of this extraordinary artist who has gained major international recognition in the 1990s. The images in Kentridge's films depict political realities, expressed in terms of individual human suffering. The films are composed of patiently reworked drawings; a week's drawing can give rise to just forty seconds of animation. A major touring exhibition of Kentridge's work is presented at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago, the New Museum of Contemporary Art, New York and the Hirshhorn Museum, Washington, DC, during 2000-2001.
