The Black Shrouds

When Diana Prescott runs away from home and a domineering father to become an actress in New York City, she little suspects that she’ll soon become involved in the murder of two old maids at a boarding house full of eccentric characters. When the police summon her irate father to the scene of the crime, he installs himself in a spare bedroom and tries to lure her back to the family mansion in upstate New York. While the old man knows how to profit by canning peas in great quantity, he sadly overestimates both his ability to play bridge and to control his headstrong daughter. There’s also a very eligible young man about the place who just might have been hired by the old man to woo his daughter back home. If Di misjudges this young man’s intentions, she’s no slouch when it comes to detecting. While the police flounder and her father blusters and the young man courts, Di turns sleuth, spotting the significance of a copy of Elsie Dinsmore, an old-fashioned family photograph, and a man’s hat in solving the murders. This is a 1941 entry in “a delightful series of books... set in the ’30’s and ’40’s... that never ceases to entertain with witty dialogue and marvelous characters.” — Barbara Douglas and Martha Farrington of Houston’s Murder by the Book, quoted in the Autumn mystery issue of Book Sense.
