Saint-Saëns's Danse Macabre

It's 1872 and the colorful streets of Paris, France, are full of life. Hidden beneath the city, however, is an underground cemetery, home to more than six million skeletons. On a quest for artistic inspiration, composer Camille Saint-Saëns visits the unsettling tombs.

Weeks after his visit Camille remains both haunted and amazed by the catacombs. Envisioning dancing skeletons, he writes a spooky song, but no one seems to understand its meaning.

Frustrated yet determined to capture the chilling story of Maestro Death and his league of dancing skeletons, Camille abandons his lyrics and writes a new piece for instruments alone. At last, the masterpiece Danse macabre is born — a rambunctious waltz of the dead and a celebration of one composer's unwavering vision.
