Kazan
In the first chapter of this fantasy series, Kazan, a boy warrior wandering across a desert world saves a young girl named Fawna from slave traders. Fawna displays the magical power to conjure water from nothingness, which leads Kazan to suspect that she is a demon. Fawna tells Kazan that she is trying to get to a place called Goldene, but Kazan wants nothing to do with her. In the next town, Fawna and Kazan part ways but are quickly reunited when Fawna is captured by a ruthless water baron named Bolzar.
Kazan and a boisterous old lady named Arbey team up to rescue Tawna and overthrow Bolzar. In the final chapter if this volume, we learn that Kazan comes from a once-powerful tribe of nomads called the Red Sand. Kazan is the heir to the Red Sand's leader Sheeroc, who leaves his tribe in search of a robust wheat that will survive in the desert climate. Unfortunately, in their leader's absence, tragedy befalls the Red Sand. Kazan and his best friend Elsie are attacked by a powerful water demon who claims that he made a deal with Sheeroc for Kazan's life. A natural disaster ensues, of which Kazan was the only survivor.
